Luisa Valeria Carpignano

Luisa Valeria Carpignano, composer and pianist. Her artistic practice arises from literary writing and is nourished by an interest in philosophical research.


She graduated in piano with full marks at the Florence Conservatory and at the Udine Conservatory, where she graduated also in composition. She specialized with M. G. Bellocchio and with the members of the Ensemble Recherche for the contemporary repertoire as a pianist. She has participated in several international masterclasses, and she continues her studies in composition in Klagenfurt at the Gustav Mahler Privatuniversität.


As a composer she has been performed at several festivals and has received commissions, such as London Ear Festival 2013 and FLAMEnsemble commission 2014 with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Foundation, and her music has been broadcast by BBC Radio 3. In 2022 the album Prospettive Sonore was published with the support of SIAE – Per chi crea, in which she participates as a composer. In 2023 she is among the winners of the composition competition “Ragazze e ragazzi Salvemini 1990”.


She has worked as a solo pianist, chamber musician and in ensembles, playing in Italy, France, England, North America, at institutions such as the Italian Cultural Institute in London and Columbia University in New York (Barnard International Artists Series, 2015 ). In 2021 she recorded with the harpist Emanuela Battigelli the world premiere recording of "Prèlude, Valse et Rigaudon" by Reynaldo Hahn in the original version for Harp and Piano for the Artesuono label.

She has been selected in the dual role of concert performer and composer in various international cultural projects (Movin'up - GAI; New York University - Florence, etc.), and art residencies (Border Collie Art Residency Program 2019 - Enouno 2020, Dialoghi / Villa Manin 2020-21).


She has also been the curator of events and concerts that combine the classical repertoire with first performances and other arts, especially the visual. She was coordinator as well as pianist of FLAME | Florence Art Music Ensemble and co-artistic director of Firenze Suona Contemporanea, a music, philosophy and contemporary arts festival conceived in dialogue with the spaces of the Florentine Renaissance. She teaches Theory of Harmony and Analysis at Conservatorio Scontrino in Trapani.
