Hakan Ulus

Hakan Ulus (* in Buxtehude) is a German composer and since 2021 professor of composition and music theory at the Gustav Mahler Private University for Music in Klagenfurt, Austria. He studied composition with Ernst Helmuth Flammer, Adriana Hölszky, Claus- Steffen Mahnkopf and Tristan Murail at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, at the HMT Leipzig and Contemporary Music at the HfMDK Frankfurt (International Ensemble Modern Academy). Furthermore, he holds a PhD in composition from the University of Huddersfield (supervisors: Aaron Cassidy and Liza Lim).


Ulus was awarded several international stipends, artist residencies and prices (e.g., impuls composition competition, AuditivVokal competition, iema stipend, stipend of the academy of the arts Berlin, Cité internationale des Artes Paris, Schloss Wiepersdorf, state stipend for composition of the republic of Austria). His works are internationally performed by leading ensembles of new music, e.g., Ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble SurPlus, Klangforum Wien, Talea Ensemble, ELISION Ensemble, Ensemble Recherche, Hezarfen Ensemble, Ensemble mise-en, Norbotten Neo, AuditivVokal, and Neo Quartet. He gave lectures on his music, e.g., at Harvard University, Basel University, Goethe University Frankfurt, IRCAM Paris, Salzburg Festival, RCSM Madrid, Grieg Academy, Mimar Sinan University Istanbul, AdK Berlin, Detmold Music University, National University of Singapore. In the last years, he also gave masterclasses in Detmold, Madrid, Udine, Singapore and Bergen.


Since 2019, his works are published by Edition Gravis Berlin. He has published articles with Rombach, Verlag, ÖMZ, MusikTexte and Musik & Ästhetik.
